With thousands of intact examples of elaborately "gingerbreaded" Victorian homes, mansions, and
commercial buildings dating back to the 1850's, Eureka is often called "The Williamsburg of the West." Alive with the history of its rich and colorful past, it still has horse-drawn carriages, a bay cruise on a historic 1910 motor launch, a historic living-history Victorian molding mill, and antique shops galore. Eureka even has a 1920's movie theatre that on occasion still screens silent movies, with live musical accompaniment.

In addition to the nearby rugged coastline of the Pacific Ocean with its vast unpopulated beaches, Eureka is surrounded by hundreds of miles of magnificent 1,000 year old giant Redwood trees - trees so big you can drive your car through them, and taller than a football field.

For travelers looking for redwood trees, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, about 30 miles south of Eureka, has a 40 mile stretch (The Avenue of the Giants) of these ancient monuments of the prehistoric past. A half hour's drive north of Eureka begins the 300,000 acre Redwood National Park, with miles and miles of hiking trails, beaches, wildlife, and other natural wonders of these ancient monuments of the prehistoric past. In fact, the movie JURASSIC PARK- The Lost World, was filmed here.

For those looking for greater outdoor adventure, the nearby Trinity, Klamath and Eel rivers offer exciting whitewater rafting www.redwoods-rivers.com, Jet-Boat trips and sport fishing.

Closer at hand, within the realm of Eureka's Humboldt Bay, lies a National Wildlife Refuge, the Arcata Marsh and Bird Sanctuary, the Natural Dunes Preserve, and numerous beaches, rivers, hiking trails and fishing. There is also deep-sea fishing on one of Eureka's many ocean charter boats.
